Presidency University has a significant historical background as one of Asia's first Western-style higher education institutes. Founded in 1817 as Hindoo College, it later became Presidency College and was upgraded to Presidency University in 2010.

The Department of Geology, established in 1892, is the oldest geology teaching department in India. Its alumni have made significant contributions to geological sciences, academia, and industry while fostering groundbreaking research and collaborations..

Established in 1905, the Geological Institute is a student-run academic organization, one of the earliest of its kind in Asia - dedicated to nurturing students’ intellectual growth beyond the classroom. It promotes extra-academic engagement through seminars, meetings, field tours, and publications. Its annual bilingual journal, Bhu-Vidya, provides a platform for students to think independently and express ideas grounded in their academic learning. As the oldest student academic forum in the country, the Geological Institute has remained a source of pride for the Department and Presidency university since its inception.
